Beauty Hacks for Oily Skin

Having oily skin can be a downer on your day, week or even month. Knowing your skin is clogged can make you feel unclean, unrefreshed and simply unhygienic. Oily skin is caused by overactive sebaceous glands producing large amounts of sebum. This generally causes you to breakout making it difficult to feel confident in your skin. Because we know how confusing it can be to know what you can do to look after your skin, we’ve done our research and created a list of hints and tips to give you smooth, supple skin.

1. Cleansing is crucial

Keeping your skin clean may sound like an obvious step to a perfect complexion, but it’s important to know that cleansing once a day might not be enough. Sometimes you may need to cleanse up to three times per day with an oil-free, gel or foam cleanser to show immediate results. If you feel that your skin begins to feel dry or tight, reducing your cleansing routine to approximately 2 washes per day over a spaced out time period will prevent the removal of natural, healthy oils from the skin.

2. Scrub-a-dub-dub

Exfoliating once or twice a week is a great way of removing excess sebum and dead skin cells, stimulating cell renewal. This prevents breakouts and dull looking skin. To make sure you’re giving your skin the best treatment, ensure you’re using gentle rubbing motions and carefully rinsing the product from your face after use.

3. Face masks!

Finding the perfect face mask can be confusing. Clay and mud masks are your new partners in crime. Clay and mud masks work to diminish blemishes and minimizing enlarged pores by drawing out impurities and soaking up sebum to leave you with a clear, matte appearance.

4. Invest in an alcohol-free toner!

This one is simple. Alcohol-free toners help regulate sebum production by eliminating oil and dirt from the skin. It also restores your Ph level back to normal so that all other products you use after work on perfectly balanced skin. Remember to use this one everyday!

5. Moisturise everyday

It is a common misconception that moisturisers do more harm than good by blocking your pores. In actual fact, using a water-based moisturiser everyday keeps your skin hydrated and stops your skin from producing excess oil to compensate for the dryness. There is a big difference between oil and water on the skin. You can be oily but have surface dryness, this is a lack of water hence the need for a good moisturiser daily.

6. Slip, slop, slap

Yes ladies, sunscreen is a must-do. We know the feeling of putting a greasy layer of sunscreen on your face on a hot day, but trust us, ours is not greasy and it helps keep your skin feeling amazing. Not only is a sun the number one factor in ageing it also causes pigmentation (along with a many other things) that may not show for years to come. Each day you should follow a skincare regime suited to your skin, but what’s more important is what you put into your body. Avoiding sugary and fatty foods, opting for at least 2 litres of water everyday is another great way to keep your skin looking clear – and your body will love you for it.
